Island in the Sun, Diamond Starfish, Palm Tree Bracelet

When I was seven, I went to Puerto Rico. I guess you could say it was my first business trip. We toured a diamond cutting factory on the island, but that’s another story. Most exciting for the seven-year-old, was the plane ride and my first trip with palm trees.

We stayed in San Juan, at a resort on the beach. Nights on the island are vivid thirty years later. I remember walking the garden paths between glowing pools, liquid blue dancing in the night. The sound of tree frogs chirping in the dark, blending with the sound of breaking waves riding the warm tropical breeze. And palm trees, with rustling fronds standing tall, like sentries, between the resort and beach.

I brought back a conch shell and a large starfish. I kept them both, along with other treasures, in a locking glass case. Many times, I held the shell up to my ear to hear waves greeting shore. It was a portal back to palm tree paradise.
