A curious thing occurs in East Africa surrounding Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Gems found around the base of this mountain often have a special chemistry that makes their color glow. In other cases, there are East African gems that exist nowhere else on Earth.

Tanzanite is one excellent example of an entirely new gem. Tanzanite found in nature is a grey stone, which, with heat treatment, turns blue-violet. The blue-violet color is beautiful. Exceptional, rare gems, which are almost entirely blue, are the most desirable.
