Kennebunkport Blue Sky Topaz and Diamond Ring

It’s August 21st at two in the afternoon. In Kennebunkport, there’s not a cloud in the sky. The sun is up there somewhere. The tide is high. The air temperature is 82 degrees. The humidity is low, and the sky, out beyond the church, is summer blue. It feels good to be standing by the shore in the shade, listening to the sound of the waves. You and your guy had lunch downtown. And you’re sitting now on a park bench at the Episcopal Church, watching the sailboats under the pastel blue sky.

This is perhaps the single-most pure blue gem we’ve ever seen. The gem is Blue Sky topaz, our favorite shade of topaz. It’s an oval cut 10mm x 8mm, over 3 carats of blue topaz. The cutting is excellent which means the top of the gem has flat surfaces that catch and reflect the light. Light enters, reflects, refracts inside, is sliced and diced, and emerges out of the top of the gem as a glitter of pastel blue light. The color is so pure that someone across the room can see its summer color easily on your hand. You are always within three feet of your gem. You know the color well because you have lived your life under blue skies.

On the east and west wings are two pointed baguette shaped diamonds. The entire top of the ring shows just gems. The underlying ring is all platinum.

Blue topaz is remarkably well-priced and is often poorly cut. It is possible, however, to cut blue topaz superbly well. The price for a well-cut gem can be double — it’s still a bargain.
