Lady Captain’s Rare Aqua Blue Maine Tourmaline Ring

A curious thing happens in tourmaline mines. The guys will be mining along; they open a new gem pocket and are surprised by what they find. I’ve been at Maine gem mines when I’ve watched the owner take one look and go, “Huh???”

He then says why he is surprised. I’ve seen these surprise moments when the surrounding crystals are in a curious arrangement. It can be the layout of gems or the soft clay packed tight with crystals lying helter-skelter. The best and most interesting moments are when surprising colors of crystals occur.

An amazing tourmaline color discovery was this aqua blue. We have two rings in our Lady Captain’s design, each set with an aqua-blue Maine tourmaline. The gems measure 4.5mm, are round, and are set in white gold. They look fabulous and are a rare Maine color.

The crystal, or crystals, were found several years back, and we’ve only recently mounted up the cut and polished gems. They came from Mt Mica in Paris, Maine, where tourmaline was first found in 1820. If you want a bigger or smaller aqua-color Maine tourmaline, it’s not likely. If you want yellow gold, no, not a chance. White gold is it, and this is a rare pair of rings.
