5,000 pound Discovery of Maine Amethyst

Years later I went back. A forest had grown up, trees, serious trees – were everywhere. It had been 30 years before, an open lot, a thin layer of gravel over bedrock. The music camp next door bought the adjacent property for protection. They wanted to build a ball field. The hired a contractor to clear and remove gravel, to fill and level. All was going according to plan until the trucks stopped coming down with fill. The music camp owner walked up to the site and saw purple crystals all over the ground. Found the contractor had filled his truck and was hauling the gems away.

The owner shut the contractor down. He hired a professional mining team and they excavated 5000 pounds of Amethyst. They stopped mining after 2 years because they had found so much. This is a 10x7mm rich purple amethyst from that gem find. Deep, rich grape color amethyst, found here in the western mountains of Maine. Great value.
