Here’s a Fun Fact

In a cubic foot of snow there are as many as a billion snowflakes. If you did some snow shoveling recently, you can easily claim that in every shovelful of snow you moved more than a billion… you finish the sentence, because you’ve got bragging rights.

In Portland, Maine we were just grazed by a monster east coast storm. By noon February 2nd, we had received 8-inches of snow; we call that a dusting. Our compensation? Great wave action along our coast.

Further south and west, New York City reported 17-inches. Newton, New Jersey got 32-inches. In a big city, at some point people stop complaining, a bigger number becomes an historic moment, it becomes a badge of honor. With even more snow it becomes surreal. It might even be called pretty, and then it’s time to get the camera out, so that you can show all your friends in Florida what they are missing.

It snowed all night. Listening to the radio, waiting for your town. Breakfast and out the door. A free day. Sound of chains and spinning tires. Snowplows piling high. Sledding on snow-packed streets. Toboggans on the hills. Forts with tunnels. Snowballs. Snowmen. Icicles dripping in the afternoon sun. Pink cheeks, red nose, wet mittens, damp hair, hand-knitted wool hats drying on the radiator. The smell. The warmth of the kitchen. It was a good day.
