Climbing Katahdin – The Ranger Warned Us

The ranger’s report at the Roaring Brook trailhead said something to the effect of, “not a great day to summit, but we’re not going to say don’t do it.” I was with my girlfriend (future wife), soon to be sister and brother in-laws, as well as his brothers. My brother-in-law had been coming to Katahdin for many years, big family trips often lasting several weeks. He also had hiked the Appalachian trial after graduating college, Georgia to Maine. Fleet of foot, his trail name was Apollo. He knew mountains. He thought it would be fine. We all agreed.

Reaching Chimney Pond, the ranger on duty said something like, “I’m not saying don’t do it, but it’s not looking great. Could be some weather coming in.” We talked. We lightly debated. It was sunny. I don’t recall serious conversation of turning around. We decided to keep going.

Knife’s Edge

Chimney Peak to Knife’s Edge we marched on. For those who haven’t been along Knife’s Edge, it’s aptly named. Steep slopes fall away on either side as you scramble along a narrow width of large rocks. It gets your heart thumping, from the climb and the look down.

Reaching the summit it was time for a well-deserved lunch of PBJ’s. Our first bits were met with the worst sound you can imagine when standing atop a 5,200-foot mountain without a shred of cover in sight, a rumbling in the distance. We needed to get down, NOW.

Thunder boomed louder and soon lightning flashed. Thor was battling an enemy right over our heads. It felt like we were standing where lightning and thunder are born. Small pellets of hail fell skitter scattering bouncing. We were all scared, but the only thing we could do was keep moving. The hail turned to rain, sheets of rain, turning the trail into a river.
As quickly as it began, it ended. The sun came out. The rain water that had gushed like rapids turned to a trickle. We reached tree-line, all shocked, glad to be alive.

My recommendation: only climb Katahdin on an A+ weather day. I’ve tried to hike it two times since. Once a couple friends and I made it up the ranger station at Chimney Pond. It had just started to rain and we saw some people coming down from the summit. They looked ragged. We turned around. The third time, I had a camp site reserved but a tropical storm was coming through the night before the hike. We decided to cancel. Also, it’s best to do some training climbs before attempting Katahdin. They say to expect an 8-12 hour hike.
