This is a story of a warm memory and a regret. The Good Egg Café opened in Portland, Maine in 1982. The café looked warm and friendly. The name, “Good Egg” drew me in.
For some reason, though, I never went. It was only four blocks from our store on Congress Street. I walked by it dozens of times. I drove by hundreds of times. Each time I passed it I thought about going. I could have gone. It was so close. I should have gone. I had years of opportunity. And yes, like many good things in time, the café simply went away. We all have things we even know at the time will be really good, will be fun, that we should do, things we want and then simply don’t do.
When I saw this crystal egg, I loved it instantly. It’s made for us in India. The crystal egg is naturally clear, white quartz sculpted in the shape of a perfect egg. The egg is 3/4-inch long, not counting the loop at the top. It’s crystal clear, perfect, and is sitting in its gold and diamond cage, simply floating within. The moment I saw it, the Good Egg Café came to mind, with its aura if warmth and welcome.

It was a winter day. We had a foot of snow on the ground. Another storm was sweeping up the East coast. I wanted a good photo showing the crystal egg within its cage of gold. showing the space around the egg. I attached the chain to a rafter in the basement and illuminated the piece with a single blub. The egg focused the light in the lower right just below its equator of diamonds. Even though the egg is pure white and translucent, it glowed amber gold.
Our family has a cottage on a white sand Maine beach. Between us and the Spurwink River is a state conservation area where Least Terns and Piping Plovers lay their eggs and fledge their young. The sky above, a 20-acre space, is filled with mom and dad birds in June, July, and August.
This photo shows the clarity of the crystal very nicely. In the lower right, we show how the vertical gold lines meet at a circle at the bottom.
Building a nest takes one week. From laying an egg to hatching a baby robin is two weeks. Two more weeks and the baby robin is on its own. The speed of moving from egg and yoke to bird with feathers, feet, and wings is remarkable.
The egg is pure. The egg is perfect rock crystal. The crystal is clear white, transparent, and held within its gold cage…not attached, but free to move. Then there is the magic equator of diamonds that surround. The necklace is about the promise and fulfillment of life. On its 18-inch chain, The Good Egg rests two inches from your heart.
