Revere Green Maine Tourmaline & Diamond Ring

Item #: G3852

Revere
One if by land, Two if by sea

I probably should think more about this guy, a hero of the American Revolution. Here is a jeweler – a silversmith, who left his day job heating, forming, shaping silver to create bowls and cups, forks and knives – to saddle up and go galloping through the towns of north Boston to call out to his countrymen, “The British are coming, the British are coming!” In Longfellow’s poem he’s on the other side of the Charles waiting for a guy to climb up four flights of stairs in the Old North Church to hold the signal to let his future country know to be ready and prepare.

This is Revere, a ring named after our American hero. In our repertoire of classic rings it is the simplest of all our designs. We built it as the lowest profile of all our three gem classics, center and side gems finger-hugging close, simple, smooth east-west shank. Easy on the eye, super smooth and comfortable on the hand.

The Revere Ring
I Once Sat
With a Silversmith

His house and studio were on a mountain top. His driveway was a mile long. It sashayed and spiraled up the mountain. His steel anvil was set on top of a steel table. He had a collection of hammers by his side. My 4-year-old son was with us. He sat on the silversmith’s lap and tried his hand at hammering. I listened to the sounds; steel on silver has a beautiful thunk. You can hear the silver give way as the metal moves, the hammer swings, the anvil rings. I watched as a heavy wire became thinner vertically and then thinner horizontally as it became a cuff bracelet, almost round. I loved the purity of the sterling and the certainty of the hammer.

This was 35 years ago. I don’t remember if this was eastern New York or western Massachusetts. What I clearly remember is the anvil and the joy of his creation as the silversmith worked. He was a silversmith, but he also worked beautifully in gold.

I would have loved to have spent a day in Paul Revere’s silversmith shop in 1776.

Revere
Green Maine Tourmaline & Diamond
Ring

What I love about this ring is its simplicity, its purity, its elegance, its sweep of beauty across the hand. This ring is yellow gold, with the gems set in white gold, and made with a genuine Maine tourmaline mined in the western mountains of Maine. We choose only Royal Ideal-Cut diamonds, cut for World standard best brilliance, high white color, sub-microscopic clarity, and perfectly matched for size. We make and set our Revere rings in our own shop here in Portland, Maine.

What I love about this design is it sits low, in fact, it’s the lowest profile three gem ring ever made, which means it sits comfortably, naturally on the hand. Low profile means it’s glove-friendly, too.

Maine Tourmaline, A Maine Story
An American Gem

First discovered in 1820 and in subsequent finds over the years, these early discoveries put Maine on the world map as a source for high-quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.

Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.

100% Natural

We go to Maine’s gem mines. We know the miners. We know the gem cutters. We guarantee our tourmaline to be from Maine and is 100% natural. Cross maintains the largest collection of fine Maine tourmaline jewelry in the world.

Window of Opportunity

Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.

Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.

Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. Today, there is a rare opportunity to own a bit of Maine/American pride and heritage, and history in choosing a piece of Maine tourmaline jewelry.

90-Day Returns/Exchanges

Our extended ninety days, for a small business, is almost unheard of. Truth is, we shop for gifts too, and rather than scrambling at the last minute and feeling the tension of time, we like this more relaxed approach. We wish everyone did something like this… it would be a kinder, gentler world.
