It’s so easy now to say, “50 years ago”. I can and will. Was it just yesterday? Feels like it. I went to Cape Cod 50 years ago by myself. Spent 3 days. I used to do something I called “Lost Weekends”, where I’d go on a trip with a general sense of direction and a big folding map, ready to go until a side road looked interesting, then I’d make a right turn and see where it took me.
This 1971 trip was interesting, with many vivid memories. One of the rich memories were split rail fences, heavy with red roses – almost nothing but red covering the fences – surrounding Cape Cod houses at the shore, which is the inspiration for the name of this piece. Its east-west sides are pink gold roses and green gold leaves. The ring is lush with roses in the way these rose cottage fences were on old Cape Cod.
