SparHawk Maine Tourmaline set in the Savoy Diamond Ring Design

SparHawk Tourmaline Diamond Ring

Recent world-class gem tourmaline find in Maine SparHawk tourmaline and how I came to write today’s email. I was ten. I found a book of old radio scripts in my grandfather’s attic one Saturday morning. I read the story of two kids finding a treasure trove of gem tourmaline on a hill in the back of the town of Paris, Maine. It was 1820 and was America’s first and most important gem find. I sat under a bare lightbulb in the attic and read the story again and again. It was 1960.

I brought the book downstairs and asked my grandfather, Lin Cross, if it was true that gems had been found in Maine. He said it was true. I asked if they still found gems. He said, “Occasionally, but not really.” I remember feeling dejected that I was born too late. I’d missed the massive treasure find of gems. Now skip ahead 50 years. Gems have been found all over the western mountains of Maine during a recent 40-year period. Much more has been found in these last 40 years than everything that had been found in the 1820 discovery.

We were thrilled with this new gem discovery at the Havey Mine in 2010. SparHawk mint green teal Maine tourmaline has rocked the jewelry world. It’s a Maine tourmaline find of a bright, lively spring green color. I’ve had the opportunity to visit some of the most significant discoveries at this mine. Gem mines and their discoveries are sporadic. In these 40 years, we’ve had remarkably good fortune. You might call it a successful roll of the dice coming up with so many important new finds in a short period of time. The SparHawk discovery is active, though currently just resting. The mine owner wants to go amethyst mining. With his luck, he will be very successful.

We have gem tourmaline that was cut by Sean Sweeney, America’s best gem cutter, who has now passed away. The gems are breathtakingly beautiful. The gems are true collector’s items. Sean Sweeney cut these gems, and because he was America’s best tourmaline cutter, his gems are now collectibles. Someday, his gems may be regarded like a Picasso or Monet.

The Design

The ring is our Savoy design from our London Royal Collection. Exquisite detail. Sprinkled within are 24 small diamonds, with the diamonds all worked into the lacework detail. The gem in the center is a classic SparHawk with a beautiful spring green color. It’s a 2.62-carat emerald cut.

Why We Love This Ring

Fine gauge ribbon wire detail. Tourmaline secured with double prongs, centered in a scoop neckline of gold. Center point detail, full view open sides allow light in. Off the shoulder divided row of fourteen small diamonds, bead-set micro-milgrain border. The front and back profile is scalloped with ten diamonds and finished with hand-engraved detail.

Gem Find of a Lifetime Video

World Famous Discoveries

Treasure Trove of Gems

I’ve always dreamed of a gem find like this. To have this mine be so close to home, just 28 miles north of our store in the mountains of western Maine, is amazing. Gems so fine, so pure, with colors so vivid. It’s important someone documents this historic gem find here in Maine, because it’s a history-making discovery in the world of gems.

The video above is 1:43. It gives you a good idea of the excitement we feel for the gems we are discovering here in Maine.

Maine has been world-famous for the tourmaline gems mined here for over 200 years. The geology in our western mountains has yielded a treasure trove of world class gems. Cross Jewelers has been the Maine state leader, bringing fine Maine tourmaline jewelry to all of America for over 100 years.

We have over 200 pieces of Maine tourmaline jewelry from both the SparHawk mine and other Maine mines.

Two options for deeper Maine gem mine understanding:

A.) The 32-page written story of the 2013 gem mining season at the SparHawk mine.

b.) A collection of gem mining videos at the SparHawk mine.
