The Sea is Calling
He said, “…I come here every year because I have to.
I come here to relax, reset, and restore.”
I try to make it to Monhegan Island every year since I first discovered it’s magic more than twenty years ago. Monhegan lies about 12 miles off the mid-coast of Maine. It’s a destination for artists, nature lovers, and anyone who’s looking for a “reset”.
On one of my early visits, fresh off the boat and still on mainland time, I quickly crossed the island woods trail looking for a remote spot on one of Monhegan’s highest cliffs. I thrashed through the brush and came upon a man sitting on a cliff edge looking out to sea. I stopped. He was back to. He spoke without turning, “I come here every year to sit on this cliff.” He paused, then continued softly, “I live in New Jersey. I come here every year because I have to. I come here to relax, reset, and restore.”
I stood silently for a moment, then said, “I understand”. I looked at the ocean then quietly backed away. I really do understand the need for quiet time by the sea. There is a healing property to the open expanse, the fresh air, the sound of waves and the rhythm of the tides.

The Sea is Calling
The ocean is magic, Maine is magic. Millions come to Maine each year looking for something, some internal connection to nature and the sea. Our Sea is Calling necklace has a deep ocean blue sapphire at the center. A diamond halo compass surrounds, leading you to where you truly find peace. The sea is indeed calling.
Monhegan Island
If you’re looking for shopping, a vibrant restaurant scene, or a list of “things to do, places to go”, I’d advise looking elsewhere. Visiting Monhegan is like going back in time with an aura of the world 100 years ago. Time flows differently on an island, it slows, and on Monhegan this is truer than any other peopled Maine island I’ve visited with the exception of perhaps Matinicus, an even more remote island outpost.
Painting Diamond Light
What stirs the soul? What motivates and inspires?
A poet with words, a painter with a brush, a jeweler with diamonds – each tries to capture the beauty of glittering sunlight on the sea. While Mother Nature will always do it best, we will always be inspired to capture beauty, wherever it resides.
The sapphire in the Sea is Calling Necklace is cobalt blue swept from the artists’ palette. A blue sapphire sea framed with a diamond compass. The compass points home; the sea is calling.

Why a Cross Blue Sapphire is the Best
We love blue. We know blue. We live by the blue sea, beneath summer blue skies. Even our business is located on a peninsula called Portland, surrounded by saltwater on three sides. We can feel the blue pulsing with every tide. Even from the rooftop of our building we can see the open sea. Binoculars show ships coming and going on a blue, blue sea.
We love blue sapphire, it’s bright, brilliant and is amazingly durable as the second hardest gem to diamond – making it a highly wearable gem. Ideal even for rings. We love blue sapphire, we love it so much we’ve traveled to southeast Asia to find first choice colors. We choose a lighter, brighter blue than most American jewelers because it shows up best under a wide range of real world lighting conditions. Our blue sapphires look and perform best on sunny summer days to candlelit dinners for two. We want your blue sapphire to dazzle you, dazzle your partner, and everyone in any room you choose to visit. Cross blue sapphires are the best.
