The New Day Has Begun

I go to the shore to sit at the rock. It’s my rock. I discovered it 30 years ago. Its seat is flat, it’s horizontal. It’s a perfect height with room for legs and most importantly it’s got a back I can lean in to. And truth – I’d call it comfortable. It’s wide enough for two to sit with space to set some sparkling water, chips, and an Italian.

Our shore is ¼ mile long. I’ve looked, there is no other perfect sitting spots as good as my rock. I’ve never seen anyone at my rock unless I invited them to sit with me. I go there for morning sunrise. At high tide it’s about 3 feet above the sea. On days of good waves, good surf, I can’t go to sit because the waves will sweep up over my rock and 6 feet beyond.

Sitting for sunrise 90% of the time, it’s perfect. It’s just me and the gulls, buffle-headed ducks, and an occasional seal. I wait. I watch. Every morning is different. Every morning is an adventure. The horizon brightens. The sun sparks the edge and in 22 minutes the show is over. The sun has risen two diameters. The new day has a begun.
