The Ocean’s Embrace

Once upon a time, in a little village beside the sea in Maine, there lived a young woman who believed she could predict the weather simply by studying the ocean and the sky.

“Calm seas tomorrow,” she would confidently announce, usually just before dark clouds gathered, and a storm came rolling ashore.

The villagers found this rather amusing, but the young woman remained determined. She loved the sea and believed that, one day, she would learn to understand its secret language.

One stormy night, rain rattled against her windows and the wind howled down the chimney. At last, she fell asleep and dreamed she was walking alone along the moonlit shore.

As the tide slowly retreated, something blue flashed beneath the water. Nestled between two ancient rocks was a sapphire as deep and mysterious as the sea itself. When she reached toward it, two little waves curled protectively around the blue gem, as though the ocean were reluctant to surrender its treasure.

Then the foam surrounding the sapphire turned into diamonds, sparkling like sunlight scattered across the water.

Just as her fingers touched the gem, she awoke with a start.

For weeks afterward, she could not forget the dream. She remembered the sapphire’s striking blue, the golden waves curling around it and the strange feeling that the sea had been trying to tell her something.

Then, one afternoon, she took a different path home.

As she passed the village jeweler’s shop, a glint of blue caught her eye. There in the window was the ring from her dream, a magnificent sapphire embraced by two cresting waves of yellow gold and encircled by brilliant diamonds that shimmered like sunlight upon the sea.

“Could it truly be?” she whispered.

She hurried inside, and the old jeweler smiled as though he had been expecting her.

When he slipped the ring onto her finger, it fit perfectly.

“It looks as if it was made for you,” he said. “I call it The Ocean’s Embrace. The jeweler said, the design came to me several weeks ago in a dream.”

The young woman looked down at the sapphire and knew at once that the ring had found its rightful home.

From that day forward, she wore a little piece of the sea upon her hand. In time, she did become better at reading the ocean and the sky although the villagers still carried umbrellas whenever she promised sunshine.

But she had learned the sea’s most important secret: if one watches patiently and listens with the heart, the ocean will always reveal when something wonderful is on its way.
