Christmas Day 2013. An ice storm several days before had coated much of Maine with a half-inch blanket of ice. Wood stove cranking kept us warm. After the morning blizzard of presents, we ventured outside, bundled against the cold for a walk in the woods.
The world dressed in ice under a cloudless bluebird sky with the sun glistening off thickly coated limbs and red winter berries trapped in individual snow globes created a magical winter wonderland. We crunched and tromped through the backwoods, over streams, and around heavy, bent branches.
There is a short-lived window of great beauty after a winter storm before the sun melts and the wind dusts the winter jacket off. Before car exhaust darkens the fresh winter coat, the familiar becomes a peculiar variation of itself. The well-known backyard, forest path, or routine drive to work is transformed.
